4th largest site on the Internet increases ad inventory by over 10,000 times.

Situation

GeoCities was the fourth largest site on the Internet. The company had difficulty launching new infrastructure to support meteoric rise in membership.

Findings

Through organic growth, the site’s infrastructure became unmanageable and development slowed significantly. Communication between different aspects of development was strained and not focused on future growth and scalability.

Action

FreelanceCTO restructured the site’s information architecture, redesigned the visual look and feel, and refactored site to support over one million members and optimize revenue for the company. FreelanceCTO also introduced a simple Content Management System to the production team that enabled them to standardize and accelerate the development and launch of new services to less than 10% of previous benchmarks.

Result

GeoCities was easily able to add new members and surpassed the one million member mark as a result. Ad inventory increased over 10,000 times, and the company was bought by Yahoo for over 3 billion dollars a year later.
